Less than an hour old and he already has issues.

Damn kid.

When j was born, he was having a little trouble breathing. Not unusual, they whisked him away while my parts were still sitting outside of me. They figured just a little oxygen and he'd be good to go. Nope. They checked his lungs and didn't like what they were hearing, so he earned himself a trip to the NICU. Figured it'd be a quickie trip. But as we have learned, this child is bound and determined to be a pain in the ass.

After getting to the NICU, they took an x-ray of his lungs and there were white streaks. Not good- it's either fluid or due to immaturity. Fluid makes more sense, but the doctor wasn't willing to commit either way. They weren't liking what they were seeing from his heart either, and after checking that determined he had a murmur. It's caused by a hole the exists while in utero that normally closes up upon birth. j's didn't. Not uncommon, just takes time and it often corrects itself. That is when they changed his checkout date to 2 weeks. There really is no finite date, it's just a matter of waiting. He is off everything except oxygen at this point and eating more than they are wanting, so things are looking up.

And now for the longer term- while not NICU-worthy, it is something we will have to get fixed. j has a hypospadius (the urethra opening is in the wrong place on his penis). His is on the bottom side and will be easily correctable by surgery, so it's really more an issue for us than him. Due to this and the fact the he only has half his foreskin anyway, circumcision was not on option (settles that decision for us).

Goodness, he is testing you, isn't he? I can only imagine how you are feeling right now. I know that when his early "issues" are ancient history (and they will be!), you'll be able to look back and even laugh at some of this.

Hang in there, Momma!!

K - i just read about the hypospadius. I wanted you to know that my brother had this too. I was 12 when he was born so I remember all of it. He had the corrective surgery at about 18 months old. Email me at jenwargo@hotmail.com if you want any details. My brother is 22 now and I don't even know if he knows about the surgery.
